The Child and Family Institute (CFI) offers part-time externship positions to doctoral students from clinical, counseling and school psychology programs. Externs chose between two rotations in either the Outpatient Clinic or Comprehensive Adolescent Rehabilitation and Education Service (CARES). The goal of the externship program is to teach students about conducting clinical work in with diverse urban clients in a hospital-based, community-oriented mental health setting.
Externship in Child and Adolescent Outpatient Treatment
This experience is ideal for second, third and fourth year doctoral students. CFI’s outpatient department (OPD) is a multi-disciplinary clinic that provides intake evaluations, psychopharmacological treatment, neuropsychological testing, individual, family, dyadic and group psychotherapy. The target population is children between the ages of zero and eighteen, and their families. Patients come to CFI seeking treatment for a wide range of psychosocial difficulties, psychiatric diagnoses and severity of illnesses. Trainees, along with permanent staff conduct over 20,000 patient visits annually. Externs are fully integrated into the life of the clinic. They carry approximately six psychotherapy cases, conduct intake evaluations, run groups and attend all clinic-wide administrative meetings. CFI has a growing Parent-Infant Center for infants and toddlers ages zero to three where trainees may work with a parent-infant dyad. Supervision takes place in both weekly individual sessions and in groups. Prior hospital-based clinical experience is preferred but not essential.
Externship in Adolescent Day Treatment
The CARES program is a collaboration of the New York City Department of Education and the Hospital Center. It provides high school students suffering from psychiatric difficulties and/or substance abuse issues with the opportunity to work toward a Regents, IEP or General Equivalency diploma while receiving intensive group and individual psychotherapy, as well as psychopharmacological treatment. The externship provides training in Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and substance abuse treatment in a fast-paced but highly supportive milieu setting. Trainees participate in all aspects of the therapeutic community, carry individual cases and co-lead groups. They receive several hours of individual and group supervision on a weekly basis. Prior hospital-based clinical experience is strongly preferred. This externship is ideal for an advanced student.
All externs from both tracks are welcome to attend our intensive summer orientation training and Grand Rounds lectures. During the academic year may also participate in didactic courses along with our psychology interns and child psychiatry residents. A commitment of sixteen per week is required. Positions will begin on July 1st and end on June 30th of the following year. Applicants from school, counseling and clinical psychology doctoral programs (Psy.D. or Ph.D.) are welcome to apply.
